Yamato chefs cook up excitement at the teppen tables

by Laura M. Allen
There is no need to travel great lengths to experience great Japanese cuisine. Yamato is convientley located in Agoura Hills. This eloquent restaurant is fully equipped with traditional umbrellas, statues, and other authentic Japanese pieces.

What sets this restaurant apart from other Japanese restaurants? Yamato offers a full bar for the perfect before or after dinner drink, a complete sushi bar, dining tables, and Teppan cooking tables.

Yamato offers a variety of sushi and sashimi at a reasonable price. (Sushi rolls range from $4.50-$9.50).

The sushi chefs welcome their diners with a friendly Japanese "hello" and never forget to thank them as they depart. Though reputation has it that sushi restaurants only cater to people craving raw fish, many of the dishes are cooked. Examples include the tempura chicken and salmon on the regular dinner menu, and everything at the Teppan tables. In addition to the regular menu, Yamato offers specials that vary from day to day. It's a great place for the family and children have a nice selection on their own kid's menu.

I enjoyed the Unagi (cooked fresh water eel), the Hawaiian Roll (Eel, avocado, and cucumber surrounded with sticky rice and seaweed), and a spicy tuna roll. All rolls can be served as cut or hand rolls.

Yamato offers a variety of vegetarian dishes as well, including tofu steaks and vegetable rolls. Feeling a little daring for dessert? The Banana Tempura is delicious. Served on its peel, smothered in chocolate sauce and topped with a cherry, it is the perfect ending to a great sushi meal.

Among the other available desserts is the mochi ice cream and ice cream tempura. For those diners who have been a little skeptical of a sushi eating experience, there is no need to shy away from Japanese cuisine at Yamato.

The Teppan tables offer a perfect alternative. Seated in front of a grill, each chef artistically prepares the meal in front of you. From the knives that are tossed into the air to the fire that soars high, it makes the dining experience unique and entertaining.

Steak, chicken, and shrimp dinners can be prepared in this manner along with vegetables and rice. Yamato is suited for a lunch or dinner with family, friends, or a date. Yamato Restaurant is located at 28700 Roadside Dr. in Agoura Hills. (818) 706-7711
